Prevailing Prayer is at the heart of the Prayer Union vision.

It is prayer that goes beyond a moment of inspiration or a quick request. It is a life of persistent, watchful and faith-filled prayer—remaining before God with a burden until we have faithfully brought it to Him and continue to trust Him with the outcome.

We pray.

What Is Prevailing Prayer?

Prevailing Prayer is persistent prayer offered in faith, humility and dependence upon God.

It is the willingness to continue seeking God when the answer is delayed, to continue interceding when circumstances are difficult and to continue believing when the situation appears unchanged.

Prevailing Prayer is not an attempt to force God to do what we want.

Rather, it is a commitment to seek God’s will, align our hearts with His purposes and faithfully intercede until the burden has been surrendered to Him.

The Biblical Foundation

Scripture repeatedly presents prayer as an ongoing relationship with God.

Jesus taught His disciples to “always pray and not give up” (Luke 18:1).

Paul instructed believers to “pray continually” (1 Thessalonians 5:17).

James teaches about the power of the prayer of a righteous person who prays with faith and perseverance (James 5:16–18).

These passages remind us that prayer is not merely about asking once.

Prayer involves:

Seeking.

Asking.

Knocking.

Watching.

Waiting.

Trusting.

Persevering.

The Heart of Prevailing Prayer

1. FAITH

We pray believing in God.

Prevailing prayer begins with confidence in the character and faithfulness of God.

Our faith is not confidence that God will always answer according to our preferred outcome.

It is confidence that God is sovereign, God is good, God hears and God can be trusted.

2. PERSISTENCE

We refuse to give up.

Some burdens require sustained prayer.

Prevailing Prayer teaches us to remain faithful when answers are delayed.

We continue to seek God—not because we are trying to manipulate Him, but because we trust Him and remain committed to His purposes.

3. WATCHFULNESS

We pray with spiritual alertness.

Prayer requires us to watch.

We pay attention to what is happening around us, discern the needs of people and communities, and bring those concerns before God.

A watchman does not abandon his post simply because the night is long.

4. INTERCESSION

We stand in the gap for others.

Prevailing Prayer looks beyond ourselves.

We pray for:

Families.

Churches.

Leaders.

Communities.

Nations.

The vulnerable.

The next generation.

We carry people and situations before God in faithful intercession.

5. SURRENDER

We submit our desires to God’s will.

Prevailing Prayer is not about controlling God.

As we pray, God also works within us.

Our desires are tested, our motives are refined and our hearts are brought into greater alignment with His purposes.

We learn to pray:

“Your kingdom come. Your will be done.”

6. PERSEVERANCE

We remain faithful through the process.

There are seasons when prayer seems difficult.

There may be silence, disappointment, opposition or uncertainty.

Prevailing Prayer calls us to remain faithful through these seasons.

We continue to pray.

We continue to watch.

We continue to trust.

Prayer That Becomes a Lifestyle

Prevailing Prayer is not intended to be limited to special prayer meetings.

It begins with personal prayer and grows into a lifestyle.

Establish regular times of focused intercession.

Building the Watch

Prayer Union seeks to develop a culture of spiritual watchfulness.

A Prayer Watch is a dedicated period of prayer in which individuals or groups intentionally seek God and intercede for specific people, situations, communities or nations.

Prayer watches may be organized according to:

• Time of day
• Specific prayer burdens
• Church or ministry needs
• Community needs
• National concerns
• Global issues
• Special seasons of prayer

The purpose is not simply to fill a timetable.

The purpose is to build a people who remain spiritually awake and faithful in prayer.

Prevailing Prayer and the Prayer Union

Prayer Union provides a community in which prevailing prayer can be practiced together.

Through Prayer Unions, believers can:

Gather regularly.

Share prayer burdens.

Learn biblical prayer.

Develop prayer watches.

Encourage one another.

Intercede for their communities.

Pray for the nations.

Train emerging prayer leaders.

Together, believers become stronger in prayer and more faithful in carrying the burdens God places before them.

The Prevailing Prayer Journey

We encourage believers to develop a simple journey:

Come into God’s presence.

Be still and seek God’s direction.

3. DISCERN

Understand the burden and what needs to be brought before God.

4. INTERCEDE

Pray with faith and understanding.

Remain spiritually alert.

Continue praying when the answer is delayed.

7. SURRENDER

Entrust the outcome to God.

8. TESTIFY

Give God thanks and share what He has done.

Prevailing Prayer for Our Generation

Our generation faces enormous challenges.

Families are under pressure.

Young people need hope and direction.

Communities need healing and transformation.

The Church needs spiritual awakening.

Nations need peace, righteousness and godly leadership.

Prayer Union believes the answer is not merely more activity.

We need a praying people.

We need believers who will return to the altar.

We need watchmen who will remain at their posts.

We need intercessors who will carry the burden.

We need generations that will pray together.

Raising a Generation of Intercessors

One of our deepest commitments is to equip the next generation to pray.

We want young believers to learn:

How to pray.

Why to pray.

How to hear and discern God’s direction through Scripture and prayer.

How to intercede for others.

How to persevere.

How to lead prayer gatherings.

How to establish prayer watches.

The goal is not simply to produce people who attend prayer meetings.

It is to raise people who carry a lifestyle of prayer.
