How to Start a Prayer Union
STEP 1 — RESPOND TO THE CALL
Begin with prayer.
Ask God to guide you and clarify the purpose of the Prayer Union.
Don’t begin simply because it sounds like a good idea.
Begin with the altar.
Pray about:
- The people who should be involved
- The purpose of the group
- The prayer burdens
- The leadership
- The timing
- The location
- The future direction
STEP 2 — GATHER A CORE GROUP
Start small.
Invite a few people who share a genuine commitment to prayer.
You might begin with:
3 people.
5 people.
10 people.
The size is less important than the commitment.
Start with those who are willing to pray faithfully.
STEP 3 — ESTABLISH THE PURPOSE
Agree on what your Prayer Union will seek to accomplish.

STEP 4 — CHOOSE A REGULAR TIME

Once the group is established, consider creating a Prayer Watch.
Members can take responsibility for specific prayer periods.

Declare God’s promises with appropriate biblical understanding.

STEP 9 — TRAIN YOUR LEADERS
A healthy Prayer Union needs people who can facilitate prayer, encourage participation and help maintain the vision.

Welcome everyone and explain why you have gathered.
2. WORSHIP & THANKSGIVING — 10 MINUTES
Turn your attention toward God.
3. SCRIPTURE — 10 MINUTES
Read and briefly reflect on a relevant passage.
4. SHARED BURDEN — 10 MINUTES
Explain the purpose and prayer focus of the Prayer Union.
5. INTERCESSION — 30 MINUTES
Pray together.

Discuss the next meeting, prayer rhythm and responsibilities.
